REPORTS OF MEETINGS .

"We shall be pleased to receive particulars of Masonic meetings for insertion in our columns , and where desired will endeavour to send a representative to report Lodge or other proceedings . — : o : — CEAFT : METEOPOLITAN .

COSMOPOLITAN LODGE , No . 917 . THERE was a large attendance on Tuesday , 12 th inst ., at the Cannon Street Hotel , on tho occasion of the installation of Brother Herbert Edwin Sanders as Worshipful Master . The ceremony was admirably performed by Bro . Hamilton P . M . and Secretary . After the banquet the usual toasts were given .

Bro . Antunovich I . P . M . gave the Worshipful Master , mentioning that Bro . Sanders was initiated a month later than himself , and had followed him through the Offices of the Lodge , The Worshipful Master was a most popular member , and held in high esteem by the Brethren as much for his display of humour as for his other qualities , which combined to make a good Mason .

The Worshipful Master , replying , thanked the Brethren for the heartiness with which they had received the toast . He hoped during his year of office to emulate those Brethren who had occupied the chair before him , and by the exercise of diligence to help to perpetuate the work and to maintain the position of the Lodge among metropolitan Masonic bodies . Touching upon the seasonal references made by Bro . Antunovich , the W . M . added that Masonry had brought them together , and he hoped thoy would remain fast friends for tho rest of their lives .

Bro . Charles Townley , replying for the Visitors , referred to the geniality of the Worshipful Master , and the charitableness of his nature , humorously remarking upon his modesty and reticence . Wherever they met Brother Sanders he always made them thoroughly welcome and quite at home . At that function the Visitors had spent a most enjoyable evening . In the Lodge they had had a splendid illustration of Masonry in its best form , the ceremonies were admirably performed , and the charges were given by Bro . P . M . Hamilton with becoming feeling and seriousness .

UPTON LODGE , No . 1227 . AT the Great Eastern Hotel , on Monday , 18 th inst ., Bro . Gildersleve W . M ., Carroll S . W ., Thomson J . W ., Smith P . M . Preceptor , Free P . M . Treasurer , G . A . Peters Sec , Steuner S . D ., Hyde J . D ., Lahive I . G ., also Bros . Gottlieb , Simpson , Levy , and Isaac .

INSTEUCTION .

The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Gottlieb candidate . Bro Isaac offering himself as candidate for the 3 rd degree , was interrogated , entrusted , and raised . Bro . Preceptor proposed , and J . W . seconded , that Bro . Carroll S . W . bo W . M . for the ensuing week , which was carried unanimously .

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT LODGE , No . 1524 . AT the Lord Napier , West Side , London Fields , on Saturday , Bros . F . Kebbell W . M ., J . Ives S . W ., Swift J . W ., Islip S . D ., Sexton J . D ., Friedlander I . G ., G . Edwards Preceptor , J . Bunker Treas ., J . Clark Sec , and P . Felthensal Org . ; also Bros . H . Willsmer , H . Pearce , F . Small , Meyer , Kotch , Caton , Harding , Edward Johnson , Captain Schlosshauer , Matthews , Wortbington , and others .

The ceremonies of initiation and raising were rehearsed , Bros . Wortbington and Hands candidates , the W . M . performing both ceremonies in a very able manner . Bros . Matthews , Edward Johnson , Oatly , and Captain Schlosshauer , of tho Arctic ship Windward , were proposed as members , and duly elected .

Bro . A . Eusby , deputed by Bro . J . B . Frost , who was unavoidably absent , presented the Lodge with two Deacon ' s Wands and a Master ' s Gavel , the Brethren fully appreciating Bro . Frost ' s generous and handsome gift , which completes the equipment of one of the best Lodges of Instruction in thc district .

CITADEL LODGE , No . 1897 . THE usual meeting was held at the Farleigh Hotel , Amhurst Road , Stoke Newington , on Friday , 15 th inst ., Bro . F . Dunstan P . M . Preceptor A . G . D . C . Middx . W . M ., H . J . Galley S . W ., F . Kebbell J . W ., Harry Willsmer Secretary , D . J . Witte Acting Preceptor , Crane P . M . J . D ., Mason I . G ., and Johnson , Matthews and Captain Schlosshauer of the ship Windward who , in connection with the Harmsworth expedition , has just returned from the Arctic regions .

The ceremony of Initiation was rehearsed , Brother Matthews candidate . Bro . Fred Kebbell delivered the charge in a very creditable and praiseworthy manner . Bro . Matthews answered the questions leading to the 2 nd degree . Bro . Witte , assisted by the Brethren , worked the first and second sections .

In accordance with the Bye-Laws , these were read by the Secretary . The following Officers were re-elected for the ensuing twelve months : —Bros . P . Dunstan P . M . 1662 A . G . D . C . Middx . ST . JOHN'S LODGE , No . 80 . AT the regular meeting , held at Sunderland , on the 12 th , Brother John Robertson S . W . was elected W . M . for the ensuing year .

PALATINE LODGE , No . 97 .

THE election meeting was held on the 14 th inst ., afc Sunderland , when Bro . Bobinson S . W . was chosen as W . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . T . Grieve P . M . was re-elected Tyler . 0 0 0

ON Friday , lst inst ., there was a large and enthusiastic gathering of Freemasons at the Masonio Hall , Durham , the occasion being a fraternal visit paid to Bro . H . Brown , Inspector of Schools , W . M . of the Lodge , by those Freemasons who aro masters of Elementary Schools in the county of Durham . An intimation having been given to the teachers thafc the W . M . would have much pleasure in gratifying their generally expressed desire of doing him such an honour , between seventy and eighty headmasters of schools , from all parts of the county , foregathered at Old Elvet .

MARQUIS OF GRANBY LODGE , No . 124 .

The Masonic work of the evening having been uncommonly well performed by the W . M ., assisted by Bro . Palmer P . M . P . P . S . G . D . and Bro . Goodenough P . M ., the Visitors were entertained at supper by the W . M ., Officers , and Brethren of the Lodge . The usual loyal toasts having been honoured , Bro . Hyden P . M . of the Constance Lodge proposed the health of the W . M . In the course of his

remarks ho said that all his professional Brethren in the district who were Masons had accepted his invitation , with the exception of three or four , and theso had expressed their unfeigned regret that they were unavoidably prevented . All present were delighted to have the opportunity of doing honour to one whom they had admired and esteemed ever since he had been with

them . Ten years ago he remembered reading in the " Schoolmaster" that the loss of tho teachers of Kent and Sussex would be the gain of the Durham teachers , and this had been amply verified . Bro . Brown ' s chief characteristics were , his great sympathy , geniality , and perfect fairness . Children , who were keen critics , were always delighted when ho entered the school , and managers had the greatest regard for him .

After his health had been drunk with great enthusiasm , and the singing of " Auld Lang Syne , " the W . M . rose to reply . He thanked them all for the very enthusiastic way in which they had responded to the toast of his health , and Brother Hyden for tho very kind words he had used in proposing the same . When he received from Bro . Hyden an intimation that some of his Masonic Brethren who wero fellow workers in the cause of education were

desirous of paying him a great compliment , he replied that nothing would give him moro pleasure than to receive them and welcome them at the Marquis of Granby . Their presence that evening in such large numbers from all parts of the Province had given him intense gratification , and they had done him a very great honour indeed . He could not conceal from himself

that as Masons and fellow educationists they had assembled to give expression to the cordial relationship that existed between them . Such a gratifying state of affairs was due as much to their courtesy and good feeling to him as anything else , and he was deeply thankful to them for all the kindness they had shown him . The spontaneous demonstration of good feeling on their part that evening would never be effaced from his memory .

Bro . Bell P . M . P . P . S . G . D ., H . M . Inspector of Mines , proposed the toast of the Visitors . He remarked he had been thirty-eight years a Mason , and had never seen so many Visiting Brethren present before , nor had the work of the Lodge been done better , nor had he passed a pleasanter evening .

Several of the Visiting Brethren replied , and among them Bro . Barnc ; P . M . P . P . G . D ., of the Tristram Lodge , who said that teachers and scholars were much indebted to Bro . Brown for suggesting improvements in school buildings , which were beneficial to health and comfort . He characterised him in his official capacity as " suaviter in modo , fortiter in re . "

o 0 o ROYAL GLOUCESTER LODGE , No . 130 . THERE was a large attendance at the meeting on Thursday , 13 th , at Southampton . The Mayor ( Bro . M . Emanuel , J . P . ) , the W . M . of the Peace and Harmony Lodge , and a large number of Past Masters and other Officers from various Lodges in the town and neighbourhood , including also the GUconomy and William o' Wykeham Lodges , from Winchester , were among the Visitors .

SINCERITY LODGE , No . 189 . THE usual monthly meeting was held at the Town Hall , Stonehouse , on Monday , llth inst ., under the presidency of Bro . John Parker W . M . Bro . W . W . Martyn having been passed to the second degree , the whole of tho Brethren adjourned to the refectory . The toast of the Grand Lodge , Provincial Grand Lodges of Devonshire

and Cornwall , having been given and responded to , Bro . John Ward submitted that of their esteemed member Bro . T . W . Martyn , the newly-elected Mayor of tho borough of Devonport . Bro . Ward stated he believed the Councillors of Devonport had conferred the position of chief magistrate on Bro . T . W . Martyn because they considered he would carry out the duties during his Mayoralty to the satisfaction of all the inhabitants .

Bro . T . W . Martyn replied in a neat speech , expressing the hope that that day twelve months all concerned , together with his Brethren of Lodge Sincerity , would bo able to say that he had acquitted himself favourably in the proud position ho had held as Mayor of so important a borough as that he represented .

TRUE LOVE AND UNITY LODGE , No . 248 . AT thc regular meeting held at tho Freemasons' Hall , Brixham , on Monday , 18 th inst ., the Hon . John Reginald Lopes Yarde Buller was initiated . Thero was a large gathering of Masons from Brixham , Torquay , and Dartmouth , including the Right Hon . Lord Churston , father of the

candidate , who is also a member of the Brixham Lodge . The initiatory ceremony was efficiently performed by Bro . John Davis W . M . The Working Tools were presented by Bro . C . Janes P . G . A . S ., and Bro . J . Mardon delivered the charge . Bro . J . Bovcy presided at the organ .

LODGE OF HOPE , No . 433 . rilHE installation meeting took place on Monday , 28 th ult ., audfor the I better accommodation of the members and visitors a dispensation was granted by the P . G . M . Lord Warwick to hold it in the Foresters' Hall , Brightlingsea . Additional eclat was given to the occasion from the fact that the Mayor of Colchester Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green I . P . M . 51
