him to all . He spoke admiringly of his zeal and assiduity , and said that the Brethren could not allow this important epoch to pass without commemorating it in some tangible way . They would therefore be pleased if he would accept the jewel , and prize it as not the least in value of the many of which he was the proud possessor .

Brother Newton , who was received with rapturous applause , said that he responded to the toast so eloquent ) proposed by Bro . Wood with feelings of emotion and the greatest trepidation , hardly knowing what words to employ . Ho was pleased to admit that he had followed up the tenets of Freemasonry and had snpported its noblest bulwark—Charity . He then gave a full and interesting account of the formation of the Lodge , how it obtained

its designation of " Waverley , " and its history to the present time . He was exceedingly proud to be the father of the Lodge , which , although it had undergone many vicissitudes , was now in its most prosperous stage , financially , numerically , and as regards the efficiency of its Officers . Speaking of his own general interest in connection with the Craft he said

that their jewel was the ouly token which he had received during his long term of membership . He accepted it with the greatest pleasure , and assured them that ho would prize it above all his possessions , and wherever he went with the Craft it would always bo worn by him . He tendered the Brethren his warmest and grateful thanks for their generosity .

Bro . J . M . Jones P . M . proposed the health of tho W . M ., saying it was a toast which needed no eulogistic introduction from him to insure its reception with royal honours . In Bro . Rawlinson tho Lodge possessed a W . M . who was esteemed by all , and who , if he emulated the work oiBro . Newton , could not fail to fulfil his duties in that excellent manner for which the Waverley Lodge was famous . Bro . Jones then called upon tho Brethren to drink the toast enthusiastically , which was done .

Bro . Rawlinson W . M ., in reply , thanked them for the way in which they had received his name . Anyone might well be proud of the position in which they had placed him , and which carried with it not only honours , but many cares . He hoped , however , that he would be enabled to perform the duties with satisfaction . A month ago he had received a telegram announcing that he had been unanimously chosen as the successor to Brother Albert Sumner , and though ho regretted that tho calls of business might sometimes

keep him away , yet he would do all he could for the Waverley Lodge , and for Masonry in general . He explained that ho was now located at Grimsby , and this fact at one time might have caused him to sever his connection with tho Lodge , only for the fact that he had always been happy and comfortable . Their kindness in placing him at their head was all the more to bo appreciated by him on account of tho distance of his residence , and the uncertainty of his attendance . He hoped , however , that he should justify the choice they had made in selecting him .

Other speeches followed , these being very pleasantly varied by songs and recitations rendered by Bros . Ogden , Cooper , J . W . Tanner P . M . 337 , Fred Firth 337 , and Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 . A telegram despatched from Bradford ( Yorks . ) was read by the W . M ., as follows : —" Hearty good wishes and congratulations from Brother Buckley . Cannot come to-night . May . good digestion wait on all the Brethren ' s appetites . "
