ALTHOUGH the Grand Lodge of Scotland was instituted in the year 173 6 , it was not until over a hundred years later that a warrant was granted for the Bombay Presidency . Apparently the lirst to be chartered was the " Hope , " No . 350 , with precedence from 25 th April , 1842 ,
followed by the " Perseverance , " No . 351 , with precedence from 27 th December of the same year , becoming 337 and 33 8 later on , held at Karachi and Bombay respectively .
The distinguished physician , the Chevalier James Burnes , D . C . L ., F . R . S ., & c , was appointed the Prov . G . M . for the Provinces of Western India and Dependencies on 30 th November , 18 36 , but on the retirement of the ( 8 th ) Marquess of Tweeddale as Prov . G . M . of the Eastern Provinces , Dr .
Burnes , in 18 4 6 , was commissioned as Grand Master of Scottish Freemasons in India . In 18 44 the " Rising Star of Western India , " No . 342 ,
