The cotton spinners of Manchester , have turned out , in consequence of an attempt of the masters to reduce their wages . As yet , however , they have not committed any acts of violence .

On the 22 nd , Prince Albert laid the foundation stone of the Birmingham and Midland Institute , a new Literary and Art Society , for the benefit of the working classes . The day was observed as a holiday throughout Birmingham , and the Prince was most enthusiastically received . - The King of Sardinia arrived at Paris , on the 23 rd , on a state visit to the Emperor His Majesty is expected to arrive in England , on Monday next .

In , some counties , however , there are us many Grand Lodges as there are divisions . HIRAM , Lowestoft . —The Book of Constitutions is to the full explicit upon the point which you raiseand no bye-law can be allotted to contravene it .

, P If ., Neuagh . —Surely our Irish brother must lie belter acquainted with the history of the Order in his own country , and , indeed , of the nature of Masonry itself , when he asks us to confirm for him liis assertion that , the Duke of Leinster is hereditary Grand Muster of Freemasons in Ireland , aud that the Duke of Athol holds a similar honour in Scotland . The idea of an hereditary office in Masonry is preposterous- Besides , if lie ivill look lo the list of Irisli Grand Masters , as given in Br . Furnell ' s Irish Masonic Calendar , he wilt find that the Earl of Mornington , the Duke of Wellington ' s father , surel

The Provincial Grand Lodges in the Colonies are all , however , subordinate to the Grand Lodge of England , with the exception of that of Canada , which lias lately become independent . The Grand Lodge of Portugal is a Provincial Lodge , subordinate to the

Grand lodge of Ireland . Ethee . —We cannot see what necessity there was to hold the Lodge of Emergency at all . If the regular eight days' notice had been given hy the fiat of the W . M . to the brethren that the candidate mis to be bid lotted for , and ( if approved ) initialed , the Lodge of Emergency was unnecessary , and if not , the whole proceeding would be clearly illegal . This , however , we do not anticipate , knowing how 10 . II the Lodge conducts its business . The illegal Lodge of Mark Masons continues to meet . Four brethrenjoined il at its last meeting .
