On Old English Bibles.

No Bible could more appropriatel y form a portion of the furniture of a Masonic Lodge than the Abif Bible , and should any Brother wish to obtain a copy for presentation , the writer would be willing to spare one from his collection . The other reissue in 1549 of Matthew ' s Bible was printed by Daye and Seres . The text does not differ greatl y from Matthew ' s , but the notes have

been altered , very much for the worse , by Edmunde Becke , who has added a dedication of three jiages to the preliminary matter . As a specimen of Beckes' notes we append the one to I . St . Peter : — " He dwelleth wyth hys wyfe accordynge to knowledge , that taketh her as a necessary healper , ancl not as a bonde slave . And yf she be not obedient and helpful unto him , endevoureth to beate the feare of God into her headethat thereb

, y she maye be compelled to learn her dntie , and to do it . " The woodcuts in the Revelations closel y resemble those in Flemish ancl other Bibles minted about the same period ; but in this Bible the woodcuts are explained b y the following doggerel , one line being printed on each side the cut : —

1 st Figure . By the Stars in hys hand we may weV se What maner of men our preachers should be . 2 nd Figure . In the middest of his church sytteth God in majestic , To whom al hys favthfull geue honoure , and glorye . 3 rd Figure .
