An Old Mason's Tomb.

AN OLD MASON'S TOMB .

ACCORDING to tradition the church of St . Helen , Bishopsgate Street , is celebrated for the number of Masons interred within its walls . Here rest the remains of Sir Thomas Gresham , of whom it has been reported thai in 1567 he was Grand Master of the south . In this church , also , is the fine altar tomb of William Ker win , " free Mason . " The sketches we give are taken from drawings made in 1869 by Mr . E . Flint ,

and kindly lent to me by Mr . R . H . Hills . The tomb is ornamented with pilasters of white marble carved in relief . The top slab is black marble , and on panels of the same material are incised the figures of the deceased ancl various armorial bearings , all filled in with yellow ; the lettering , all in Lombardic capitals , is also incised and filled in with some black composition . On the south side of the tomb are the following inscriptions , commencing on the pilaster and running along the frieze : —

IIEEB | LYETH THU BODIE OE WILLIAM KERWIN OP THIS OITTIE OP LOW | BON FREE j MASON WHOE DEPARTED THIS LYFE THE 26 ™ DAYE OF DECEMBER ANO | 1594 Beneath this , on the top > border of the panel ;—MAGDALENE JACET VIRTUS POST FATA SUP [ ER ] STES : CORPVS HVMO TEOTVM OHBISTO VENIENTE RESVRGET : CONIVGIQVE FIDE RELLIGIOQVE MANENT : VI MENTIS CONSORS ASTRA SUPRBMA COLAT

On the north side , commencing on the pilasters and continuing along the frieze;—AND | HIERE ALSOE LYETH THE BODIE OP MAGDALEN KIRWIN HIS WIFE BYWHOMEHS j HAD ISSVE | III SONNES AND II DAVGHTERS SHE DEOEASSED THE XXIIJ ™ OF AVGVST j 1592 The top border of the panel : —

iEdibvs Attalicis Londiuvm qui decoravi : Me duce svrgebant alijs regalia tecta : Bxigvam tribvvnt hanc mihi fata domv : Me dvce conficitvr ossibvs vrna meis : At the west end , upon the frieze , are the following two lines : — OHRISTVS MIHI VITA MORS MIHI LUCRVM . On the top border of the panel : — NOS QVOS CERTVS AMOR PRIMIS CONIVNXIT ABANIS . IVNXIT IDEM TVMVLVS IVNXIT IDEM QVE POLVS .

U pon the lower border of the panels , commencing on the south side , is the following inscri ption , which reads all round the tomb : — AND 5 DAVGHTERS WHEREOF 6 OF THEM LYETH HEERE IN THIS VAVLT & BEIAMIN KIRWIN Y SONNE OP WILLIAM KIRWIN DECEASED Y 21 OP IVLY AN : DOMI : 1621 WHOE HAD ISHVE 7 SONNE . ¦ The east end is entirelwithout ornamentationbut has inscribed on the
