America , from the English list of patents , that , in a patent of date July 17 th . 1719 , one Thomas Saints , of Green . lrill-rc _ . ts , got a patent for a machine for fastening soles of shoes to uppers , with a plan of the machine in which "there is a spool for the thread ; there is an awl to make the hole in the materials ; and there is a needle with the eye at the top , precisely like the Howe machine , for driving the thread throug l 1 the hole .
