" The web of our life is of a mingled yarn ; good and ill together . "—Shalcespere . I dined the other day at the Trafalgar , at Greenwich , but , alas ! it was not the Trafalgar of olden time . The whitebait had lost its flavour , the green peas had had their local habitation in a tin , and the " Crab Omelette a la Blue Seal" was conspicuous by its absence . ' The Sherry , " or it may be the Champagne , " was iced ; the guests were colder . " * M , M , * 7 V * TP

After all , if one wants a good dinner , one must stay in London ' River side hostelries may be very pleasant from a temperature point of view ; they certainly are cooler than the Freemasons ' Tavern or the Cafe Royal , but blessed is he who expecteth nothing for he shall not be disappointed—in his dinner .

JR . M , Jf . *«¦ * Js * W The late lamented Bro . Robert Burns , of Ayr , wrote , " Oh . would some power the giftie gie us , To see ourselves as ithers see us , " and most heartily do I re-echo the aspiration . At a banquet at which I was a guest not long ago , " The Visitors " was coupled with the name of a young brother wearing a new suit of provincial clothing of a minor office . In responding he , in presence of several

Grand Officers ( members of the lodge ) , proceeded to show his immense superiority by finding fault with everything , specially the installation ceremony , which had been faultlessly performed by the I . P . M ., a well known and much esteemed Grand Officer , and as good as told us he could do it much better himself . Modesty was evidently scarce when he received his share of the social virtues .

M . __ . JJ . www There are very few more functions to take place before the professional diners out can enjoy their holiday , for , after all , dining is hard work , and the time comes to everyone when he must recognise the unpleasant and stern reality of a liver . The " sweet" of tonight is sometimes more than counterbalanced by the " bitter" of to-morrow . *_ lfc * lfe

The annual banquet of the Order of the Secret Monitor , at the Freemasons' Tavern , on AVednesday , will be the first opportunity for the new manager to show what he is made of . And if he only follows in Bro . Madell's footsteps , I can assure him he will have the respect and esteem of THE DINER OUT .
