COLONIAL CLIPPINGS .

The masonic fraternity has never changed its iiohc } ' . It says to the profane , you must seek in order to know our mysteries . You will not be sought after . This first step is of the highest importance , and must be strictly adhered to . Any member of the Institution who urges a profane to become a Mason , is guilty of conduct unbecoming a true member of our Order , and deserves to be disciplined for so doing .

It is a curious fact , considering the hostility of the Roman Catholic Church to Masonry , that it was a Romanist who largely aided in its introduction into America . AVe refer to Anthony Browne , sixth A iscount Montague , who was G . M . of England in 1753 , and by whoso authority Henry Price was appointed G . M . of Massachusetts . As the family were Romanists , Lord Montague was

never permitted to sit in the House of Lords , and suffered other penalties for his conscience ' s sake . In masonry he recognised a great level of toleration , and spared neither time nor treasure in propagating its tenets . ¦ If = & ^ c

Brethren should remember that silence is absolutely necessary in a lodge . It is grossly disrespectful and an evidence of ignorance to see brethren laughing and whispering when a degree is being g iven . It is worse still to see and hear the Secretary and Treasurer counting the dues , kc , when the AV . M . is addressing the lodge . —Netr Zeal and Mail .

NEW ZEALAND—AUCKLAND . —AVAITEMATA LODGE , NO . G 89 . The annual meeting and installation of AV . M . of the Lodge AVaitemata , E . G ., was held at the Freemasons' Hall on St . John ' s day , the 27 th December last , and , as was expected , there was a very large gathering , including representatives from all the city , suburban , and country lodges , and a goodly number of

representatives from outside sister lodges . There were , including 25 Past Masters , an attendance of . 110 brethren . The lodge was opened by Bro . Captain Olive , the retiring Past Master , after which Brother Lodder , D . D . G . M . took the role of installing master ami duly installed Bro . Chas . Daniel Grey , into the chair of King Solomon . The AV . M . then invested his officers as follows : Bros . Chas . Crozier ,

S . AV . ; AV . Dunn . J . AV .: J . L . Hatswell , treas . ; II . G . AVade , sec ; AA alter Grey . S . D . ; AVm . Stewart , J . D , ; T . Dickenson and T . Prescott , stewds . ; James Garrand , I . G . and Captain Tonge . tyler . The charge to the master was delivered by Brother P . M . AVright : that to the wardens by Bro . P . M . Augur ; and that to the brethren by the D . D . G . M .. Brother Lodder . Congratulations poured in on the master ,

officers , and brethren of the Lodge from all sides , and from numerous foreign visitors , and apologies were received from numerous distinguished brethren who were unavoidably absent . At the invitation of the lodge , the whole of the visitors were entertained at a fine banquet in the lower hall . In the intervals of the toasts and subsequently , a number of songs were sung , and the brethren appeared to enjoy the gathering thoroughly .

GRAND LODGE OF NEW ZEALAND . —The question of a Grand Lodge , for this Colony which has been agitating the minds of prominent Masons f . r some years is at last resolving itself into something more akin to real business . Numerous Past Masters of the English , Irish , and Scottish Constitutions in AVellington will shortly meet to discuss the plan of action necessary to further the Grand Lodge

question . In Canterbury and Otago the same lively interest is being taken in the matter , audit is therefore not improbable that the Earl of Onslow , our new Governor , who is a Past Grand AVarden of the G rand Lodge of England , will ultimately be New Zealand's first Grand Master . AVe feel sure from communications received , that no opposition will be made by the Masonic authorities at Home to the establishment of a Grand Lodge , provided . ihowever , that everything

is done in a legitimate . Masonic manner . As things are . at present , with ten Masonic jurisdictions in New Zealand , it is absolutely impossible for the Craft to be known by " its works , '' but united , under one flag , it will be indeed a mighty power . AVhcn the Craft in New Zealand will be in a position to emulate the example of our brethren in New South AVales . then we shall be able to safely say that the star of Masonry in this Colony is in the ascendant . —Xew Zealand Mail .
